20% of this month’s proceeds will go to The Reformation Project, a Christian LGBT Non-profit seeking to train Christians on the Biblical case for the inclusion and affirmation of LGBTQ+ people in the Church. Learn more here.
Every day, bad theology kills people.
It is bad theology that tells people they are not worthy of God’s love, bad theology that gives people permission to discriminate against others, bad theology that makes people want to kill themselves, bad theology that gives people permission to discriminate, dehumanize, and even kill others.
This past weekend was World Suicide Prevention Day, a day where thousands of people took to social media to share their stories on the hashtag #IKeptLiving.
I shared my story of struggling with staying alive on a blog titled I Tried to Pray the Gay Away and It Nearly Killed Me. It was the hardest thing I’ve
ever had to write, but probably one of the most necessary ones.
The reason I wanted so badly to die was because I was the victim of a bad theology. I was told that my sexual orientation was sinful and the only way to redeem it was by seeking to change it. And when I couldn’t change, I tried to end my life.
This damaging message, that our God-given sexual orientations
and gender identities, are some how sinful, impacts people both inside and outside of the church, increasing the likelihood of violence against the LGBTQ+ community, the risk of self-harm and suicide.
Bad theology separates a divides people, it silences people, and yes, bad theology kills.
I say, enough is enough.
That’s why this design was created: a bold statement to let those around you know that there is no time to wait, that people’s lives hang in the balance, that there is no middle ground when it comes to affirming the lives of LGBTQ+ people, and that there is no room for compromise when it comes to a persons dignity.
Each month, 20% of each shirt sold will go to a non-profit LGBTQ+ organizations who focus on enriching the lives of the queer community.
